Unite Professionals case manager Julie Jay is taking on the challenge to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in February 2020 to raise money for Compassion UK, with a team of 30 others. Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest free-standing mountain in the world (5,895m above sea level). It’s located in Tanzania, a country with almost half its population living below the poverty line.
Compassion UK is highly-focused and personal in its approach to fighting poverty, with a child sponsorship scheme that enables sponsored children to receive access to education, medical checkups, nutritional support. and nurturing in a church community.
Julie has sponsored two children through Compassion UK for the last two years, and has been impressed impressed at the charity’s commitment and focus to ensuring a personal relationship with the child through regular letter writing and correspondence.
The specific funds raised by the Kilimanjaro team will be going towards a project to build houses for families in Rwanda who are currently living in shanty accommodation. It costs £3,429 to build a three-bed house in Rwanda and Compassion UK is aiming to help change the lives of 34 families through this project.
