We are so proud of Unite Professionals Case Manager Sonia Campbell-Thompson who arranged a ‘7 Marathons in 7 Weeks’ challenge for the Day One Major Trauma Support charity with the UPL team. She has now raised over £1,000 independently and also encouraged the UPL team to join in – in total, we’ve raised over £2,500 for the charity which provides help, advice, and peer support to victims of major trauma and their families.
Not only did Sonia raise money by walking a marathon each week for seven weeks in a row, but she did it while overcoming the challenges of having Degenerative disc disease. Such a hero!
Sonia suffered from a slipped disk in 2010 while out shopping. She then underwent multiple different spinal surgeries over the course of four years at the Neurosurgery Ward at Leeds General Infirmary. She suffers from chronic back pain due to being diagnosed with Degenerative disc disease, which means that some discs in her vertebrae have deteriorated or broken down.
However, she did not let this hold her back.
Despite suffering from chronic pain, Sonia raised money for the Day One Major Trauma Support, which is based at Leeds General Infirmary where she had many operations, by walking 26.2 miles each week for seven weeks in a row during lockdown. This also resulted in an improvement to her physical and mental wellbeing!
“What happened to me was so unexpected, it changed my life over the next four years, I suffered from chronic pain and had to retire from my position as an Occupational Therapist. Now, I am making the best out of a bad situation, I’ve got a job that I love and I’m keeping fit and healthy,” said Sonia.
She also motivated other Unite Professionals case managers to join in on the cause, many of which have made donations or taken up the marathon challenge alongside Sonia.
The ‘7 Marathons in 7 Weeks’ challenge has now raised over £35,000 in total for the charity, which is incredible considering it costs £330 to run the charity’s service for one week.
Well done to Sonia, you are an inspiration to us all!
